Description of Reaching Teens© Pilot

In November, 2014, resiliency expert, Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia presented at the MHC’s Annual Trauma Conference with over 800 people in attendance.  Dr. Ginsburg also learned about the Mental Health Connection and described it as collaboration “unlike any other in the country".

Subsequently, Dr. Ginsburg asked the Mental Health Connection to consider launching a national pilot of Reaching Teens© throughout the community, so that all people who work with teens - from parents to mental health providers to pediatricians to law enforcement - could speak the same language and provide consistent trauma-informed and strength-based approaches to teens across multiple systems.

Reaching Teens© consists of a textbook and 450 videos that link to the lessons. It is an evidence-informed and non-traditional curriculum. This workforce development toolkit provides practitioners (paraprofessionals to physicians) easy to use lessons best suited to needs of the youth they serve. Practitioners can earn up to 65 CEUs by completing all chapters in in the course. The American Academy of Pediatrics published the training and is providing all CEUs.

MHC’s Resiliency Committee began spearheading the implementation process in March, 2014,with thirteen MHC partner agencies agreeing to participate in the three-year project.  Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg returned to Fort Worth that month for a kick-off workshop, with approximately 250 people from pilot agencies in attendance.

The Resiliency Committee, which includes a “Reaching Teens Captain” from each pilot agency, has met monthly since March, 2014, to coordinate implementation efforts and project evaluation. Dr. Ginsburg has returned to Fort Worth several times to provide consultation and technical assistance for the pilot, the most recent being August 15-18, 2016.
