Adam McCormick, MSW, PhD is associate professor of Social Work at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. He teaches courses in child welfare and social work with families. He has a number of research interests, including LGBTQ youth in the child welfare system, the relationship rights of siblings in foster care, the intersections of child welfare and immigration, and masculinity and violence. Dr. McCormick is the author of the books LGBTQ youth in the foster care system: Empowering approaches to an inclusive system of care and Supporting LGBTQ youth in foster care: A guide for foster caregivers. He is a frequent contributor on child welfare topics to a number of publications throughout the state of Texas, including the Texas Tribune, Dallas Morning News, and the Houston Chronicle.

A Trauma-Informed approach to working with LGBTQ+ youth and families.
Research shows that LGBTQ youth experience trauma at a higher rate than their non-LGBTQ peers. Knowing that, how can service providers offer a trauma-informed level of care that meets the needs of this community?

 Understand lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) youth and the unique challenges they often face

 Explore the effects of trauma in working with LGBTQ youth and their families

 Develop practical guidelines to providing a trauma-informed, culturally-competent level of care in working with LGBTQ youth and their families
